Making Music Narratives

As a means of decompression, I experimented with making a playlist that actually can read as a narrative (with a few fillers). I think it is pretty cool.

I’m a Cuckoo (Belle and Sebastian) Two-Headed Boy (Neutral Milk Hotel) but Say it All (Sondre Lerche) and Sing me Spanish Techno (New Pornographers) on a Saturday Night (Blitzen Trapper) during A Sweet Summer’s Night on Hammer Hill (Jens Lekman). Don’t Deconstruct (Rilo Kiley) Our World (My Morning Jacket), it’s not Pangea (Someone Still Loves you Boris Yeltsin).

Lizzy (Ben Kweller), I’m Up Against the Wall (Peter, Bjorn and John) when our Chemicals Collide (Cloud Cult) to express the Finer Feelings (Spoon). I’m facing El Scorcho (Weezer) when I’m Thinking, Drinking, Sinking, Feeling (Slow Club). So Dont Talk, Put your Head on My Shoulders (The Beach Boys).

Maybe Baby (Justin Townes Earle) this is a Slow Show (The National) or perhaps a Fast Jabroni (Surfer Blood). Or this could just be the Endgame (Rogue Wave).

Monster Mash Makeup Contest

Hello all,

As we discussed, October 31st will be our
in-class Monster Makeup Contest. Another production oriented assignment,
this fun competition will help illustrate how imagination can help utilize
various resources to overcome limitations of form. While participation is
not mandatory, choosing to enter the contest offers some great rewards. For
those who missed the extra-credit reward breakdown, it goes as follows:
First Place: 40 points
Second Place: 30 points
Third Place: 20 points

In addition:
Honorable Mention, most original design: 15 points
Honorable Mention, most resourceful: 10 points

All participants will receive an automatic 5 points for entering the
contest, providing there is an evident design and effort (ie, don’t bring in
a rubber mask and put on eyeliner and claim you are participating).

Your design will be evaluated on the following measures: [disclaimer, the
following examples are not intended to be base-line expectations, rather it
is an exaggerated measure meant to provide a clearer understanding of the
evaluative approach]
Originality of Design - character selection/innovation (for example, taking
a classic model and providing a twist to it)
Variety of tools/resources used - incorporation of texture, color blending,
prosthetics, inventive patterning, etc
Execution - smoothness/final finished product
Effort - how well you performed considering the resources/skills at your
disposal

You will have 50 minutes to complete the design of your choice. I would
advise you to plan your design in advance so that you have the resources and
plans that you’ll need to complete your design in time. For example, if you
are creating an alien design and intend to avoid human hair, then you’ll
need to be prepared with a bald cap and adhesive glue and enough base makeup
to cover/color the whole head. Same preparation rules go for prosthetic
noses, ridge lines, etc. Showing up with no idea of what you’re doing/no
plan and no resources will make it incredibly difficult to complete any
design in time, much less a winning one. The more elaborate your design, the
better your odds. If you are unsure of what you may need for your design,
check online for guidance (youtube offers useful tutorials).

You are welcome to share supplies, but remember that the time restrictions
will limit ‘down-time’ while you wait for someone to finish with a
resource.

Awards will go to the designer/artist of the final creation. For this
reason, by default I expect each artist to serve as their own model. Any
non-participants enrolled in our class will serve as judges. If you require
a model, you may talk to me about bringing a volunteer into class, provided
you can justify the need for a model.

Please make sure to bring towels and a mirror in order to apply your make-up
in a clean fashion. Weather providing, and population willing, we can move
the class outside in order to reduce any mess and draw in an audience to
help evaluate the winner. Remember there are computers in the room that
people use, so if we are trapped in our room, please be considerate and keep
the mess to a minimum.

slieblich asked: i like atmosphere a lot. that track is good, but have you listened to sunshine? probably my favorite. gonna see him at bonnaroo!

I have indeed. I’ve never been to Bonnaroo. Never been a big festival sort of guy but I hear it’s a lot of fun!

Upcoming: Online Assignment 3, Reading

Hey everyone. Just a reminder: we will be watching Blade Runner and reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep over the next week. You can pick it up from any book store and it’s a quick read. PLEASE CATCH UP ON READING. You have another physical assignment coming up, so it’s important to stay up to date.

M.Feb.28: Conversations: Our Physical Future – Dystopia or Disaster

Screening: Blade Runner (Dir. Scott, 1982)

W.Mar.2: Freak Angels (Ellis, 2009) [online comic]

F.Mar.4: Internet Invention Chapter Seven

The Friday of the 4th will be entirely online.

We’re midway through the semester, so it’s time to kick everything up a notch.

I’ll be scheduling online conferences over break to discuss your projects and give you XP stats.

See you all in class today!

It’s hard to organize Tumblr blogs by topic. A single one of your blogs may include your personal updates, your art, your opinions, and a YouTube video of a cat speaking Japanese, all in a single day. This has been a real limitation of the current Tumblr Directory. So, for the last few weeks we’ve been experimenting with some brand new tools for exploring Tumblr.

The new Explore page organizes and filters posts by tag. This means that every tagged post has a chance to show up in front of an audience of millions that might not otherwise see it. Think Tumblr Radar by topic.

Up top, the Tumblr Wire makes a return, pulling in featured posts in realtime. Below is a list of popular and trending tags (currently English only, with more languages coming soon). You can also Track these tags to get notifications on your Dashboard when a new post is featured.

Make sure to tag your posts where relevant to help more people find you. You can still look up any tag using the search box on your Dashboard.

We’ve already started finding posts and following blogs that we had no idea existed. Please give it a spin!
