Hello all,
As we discussed, October 31st will be our
in-class Monster Makeup Contest. Another production oriented assignment,
this fun competition will help illustrate how imagination can help utilize
various resources to overcome limitations of form. While participation is
not mandatory, choosing to enter the contest offers some great rewards. For
those who missed the extra-credit reward breakdown, it goes as follows:
First Place: 40 points
Second Place: 30 points
Third Place: 20 points
In addition:
Honorable Mention, most original design: 15 points
Honorable Mention, most resourceful: 10 points
All participants will receive an automatic 5 points for entering the
contest, providing there is an evident design and effort (ie, don’t bring in
a rubber mask and put on eyeliner and claim you are participating).
Your design will be evaluated on the following measures: [disclaimer, the
following examples are not intended to be base-line expectations, rather it
is an exaggerated measure meant to provide a clearer understanding of the
evaluative approach]
Originality of Design - character selection/innovation (for example, taking
a classic model and providing a twist to it)
Variety of tools/resources used - incorporation of texture, color blending,
prosthetics, inventive patterning, etc
Execution - smoothness/final finished product
Effort - how well you performed considering the resources/skills at your
disposal
You will have 50 minutes to complete the design of your choice. I would
advise you to plan your design in advance so that you have the resources and
plans that you’ll need to complete your design in time. For example, if you
are creating an alien design and intend to avoid human hair, then you’ll
need to be prepared with a bald cap and adhesive glue and enough base makeup
to cover/color the whole head. Same preparation rules go for prosthetic
noses, ridge lines, etc. Showing up with no idea of what you’re doing/no
plan and no resources will make it incredibly difficult to complete any
design in time, much less a winning one. The more elaborate your design, the
better your odds. If you are unsure of what you may need for your design,
check online for guidance (youtube offers useful tutorials).
You are welcome to share supplies, but remember that the time restrictions
will limit ‘down-time’ while you wait for someone to finish with a
resource.
Awards will go to the designer/artist of the final creation. For this
reason, by default I expect each artist to serve as their own model. Any
non-participants enrolled in our class will serve as judges. If you require
a model, you may talk to me about bringing a volunteer into class, provided
you can justify the need for a model.
Please make sure to bring towels and a mirror in order to apply your make-up
in a clean fashion. Weather providing, and population willing, we can move
the class outside in order to reduce any mess and draw in an audience to
help evaluate the winner. Remember there are computers in the room that
people use, so if we are trapped in our room, please be considerate and keep
the mess to a minimum.
